Tracy Alcaide, the Art Director and Graphic Designer that we work with at Royal Robbins recently won an award in Graphic Design USA's Inhouse Design Awards in the POP, Signs, Displays and Environment Graphics category. The signage included photography that we shot on location for Royal in the San Francisco Bay Area. Congrats Tracy!

HOTEL_Jupiter
As I have shared before I am a bit of a freak about architecture from the 50's/60's and in some cases even earlier. Known today as "mid-century modern", this style often employed larger window openings that sought to encourage bringing the outdoors in and vise versa. Designs were simple and without much of the ornamentation that had been common during earlier periods. For my wife's birthday this weekend we stayed at one of Portland's iconic mid-century motels that was probably incarnated as a Travelodge or something similar and which is today known as the Jupiter Hotel. While definitely not luxurious, this is a great place to catch a concert or grab a drink at the equally iconic Doug Fir Lounge.
Two_Birthdays_In_A_Week
It was my wife's birthday this weekend and we enjoyed a rare night out on the town (first night away from the baby in a year . . . . or ever for that matter, so it was a big deal!). We started by enjoying dinner at Departure - a fancy-schmancy restaurant 15 stories above the city atop the old Meier and Frank building adjacent to Pioneer Square. The view of the city was awesome (panorama above) and the perfect place to enjoy a 90F + summer evening. After dinner we stopped at Voo Doo Doughnuts and then completed the Portland tri-fecta by walking back across the river to stay at the Jupiter Hotel.

The_ParkBOX
Kelly and Malia were great sports this week letting me take a few shots while they were hanging out around the house. Collectively referred to as the "ParkBOX," based on it's rectilinear shape and proximity to Unthank Park in North Portland, this is yet another example of the amazing vision and work by Corey Martin at Path Architecture.
